What Should We Know About Sustainable Beauty

Elements Of A Sustainable Beauty Product or Brand

For a beauty product to be defined as sustainable it needs to meet certain criteria. This includes:

  • Sustainable production methods
  • Ethical practices
  • Environmentally-friendly formulations
  • Eco-packaging
The ingredients should be organic, natural and made from raw renewable materials. Other elements that should be incorporated into sustainable beauty products are non-toxic ingredients, cruelty- free and vegan.  Most store-bought beauty products are filled with toxins which with long term exposure cause harm to your body. Deodorants are a good example of this. Most deodorants contain harmful ingredients such as Triclosan, Phthalates, Parabens and Aluminum all of which have a detrimental effect on your health. These ingredients not only cause harm to humans but also to the environment.

Our natural deodorants only contain ingredients that work in harmony with your skin and don’t have an effect on the planet. They are aluminum-free, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal and never leave marks on your clothing.

Similarly our Aurora body oil only contains natural essential oils which can help you to start your day feeling refreshed.

The Difference Between Vegan and Cruelty-Free

It’s important to know that just because a product is marked cruelty-free doesn’t necessarily mean it’s vegan. For a product to be labelled vegan it must not contain any animal based products such as honey or beeswax. A product can also be both vegan and cruelty-free but still contain toxic ingredients. Aim to find products that tick all of the boxes that way you can ensure it’s a truly sustainable product.

Sustainable Processes and Practises

As well as incorporating all of the above elements into their products sustainable beauty businesses must also look into their company practices.

Ethical Sourcing

All products should be made using ethical practices and procedures. Has the ingredients been extracted in a way that doesn’t harm the environment around it? Were the workers paid a fair wage? Were the working conditions safe?

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Packaging is another important factor to consider. Can the materials used be refilled, recycled, reused or composted? It’s not uncommon for brands that claim to be eco-friendly to overlook their packaging.

Resource and Waste Management

Does the company have a robust resource and waste management plan? Do they monitor their water usage? Are all ingredients used sourced from sustainable suppliers? How do they efficiently and sustainably dispose of any waste?

Initiative

A company should constantly be striving for perfection in all aspects of business. There are always improvements that can be made in terms of sustainable practices. Find businesses who actively seek to improve their sustainable credentials and re-evaluate their current practices regularly.
